Dancin’ in the Streets
Have we been reduced to advertising via street sign shakers? Or, is this actually an effective method of drumming up business? I have been thinking about these questions for a few days and would like others thoughts on this.
The street sign shakers have become something of a phenomenon as of late. It has been adopted by several fast food chains and filters down to local funrature stores. The elite shakers have been featured on YouTube and other social networks for their performances. But, are they really adding benefiting the business or are they eye candy for bored drivers?
One might think of this method as the bottom of the food chain for business advertising, but I would disagree and would content it’s a way to easily gain consumer mind space. I mean look at what the “hot and fresh” neon lights did for Krispy Kreme. These chains collect a substantial amount of business from the drive-by and impules customer and you might compare this strategy to that of online pop-ups. How many times have you been hungry and pass a McDonalds and think I could use a burger? I know I have several times. Now, these sign shakers are more in sight line and potential road hazard that you have to look, and then your stomach takes over.
As obnoxious as they are I would argue this is a cheap and effective way for locally owned and operated business to get literally in your face with advertising. This is also a way for the business to accomplish extending brand reach when the budgets are not there or to segment strategy with low over head.
So, the next time you see the kid on the street poppin’ lockin’ with the street sign remember that you were just another person exposed to their brand.
